Dr. Elio Napolitano P data and Resume


4/77. Obtained the degree of Dottore in Chimica (Doctor in Chemistry, a five–year program) with honors from the Institute of General Chemistry of the University of Pisa, discussing an experimental thesis entitled "Stereomutation of three–coordinate sulphur compounds: mechanism of racemization of sulphinic esters" (Supervisor: Prof. Ennio Ciuffarin).
10/77–10/78. National service: parachutist in the Italian Army, discharged with honor as sergeant.
11/78. Admitted to the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa as Perfezionando. Synthetic work in the field of heterocycles at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy (Supervisor: Prof. A. Marsili).
11/79–8/80. On leave from SNS, Research associate in Prof. D. Seebach’s group (Eidgenossiche Technische Hochschule – Zurich, Switzerland); synthesis of chiral building blocks derived from tartaric acid and their use in the synthesis of natural compounds.
9/81. Obtained a permanent position as Ricercatore (Researcher) at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. Started an independent research at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy (now Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Pisa). Synthesis of natural heterocycles and use of the metalation of aromatic rings promoted by the presence of beta–substituted alkyl groups.
8/88–9/89. On leave from SNS, Research Associate with Prof. R. Hanson’s group (Northeastern University, Boston, USA). Synthesis of halogenated derivatives of estradiol, to be developed as radioactive ligands of the estrogen receptor and employed as tracer in the imaging of breast tumors using the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) or the Single Photon Emission Computed Tomograpy (SPECT).
9/89–9/90. On leave from SNS, Research Associate with Prof. J. A. Katzenellenbogen’s group (University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, USA). Continuation of the research in the field of receptor–based imaging agents; synthesis of a variety of 18F–labelled fluoroestrogens and study of their tissue distribution.
6/93–12/93. On leave from SNS, Research Associate with Prof. J. A. Katzenellenbogen’s group (University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, USA). Continuation of the research in the field of receptor–based imaging agents; synthesis of a variety of 11C–labelled substances and study of their tissue distribution.
12/94–1/95. Invited lecturer at the Universiad Central de Venezuela (Caracas) to teach a course (20 h) on "Use of the hydrogen–metal exchange in organic synthesis".
7/97–10/98. On leave from SNS, Visiting Scientist at the Chemical Development Department of Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals (Ridgefield, Connecticut, USA). Systematic use of the dynamic resolutions for the synthesis of enantiomerically pure unnatural amino acids relevant to the preparation of anti– inflammatory drugs. 1998–2010. Teacher of Organic Chemistry 2 (polyfunctional organic compounds, heterocycles) at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Pisa.

Research Interests

1) Hydrogen–metal exchange of aromatic compounds promoted by alpha– or beta– oxyalkyl substituents and application to the synthesis of natural isocoumarins and isoquinolines.
2) Synthesis of novel estradiol derivatives functionalized at 11–beta and 7–alpha to be developed as high–affinity radioactive probes for the estrogen receptor.
3) Crystallization–induced asymmetric transformations as a systematic approach to enantiopure chiral compounds.
4) Discovery and process development for large scale preparation of compounds of interest in the pharmaceutical industry.
5) Theoretical studies of reactivity using ab–initio calculations.
