Born in Chieti, Italy, on September 24, 1943
1961–1964: Scholar of the "Scuola Normale Superiore", Pisa, and student of Chemistry at the University of Pisa, Italy.

Scientific activity

1965–1969. Organic Chemistry; synthesis of heterocyclic compounds, in particular isoxazole derivatives, and polymers containing them as monomeric units (University of Pisa). 1970. Mass spectrometry of isoxazole derivatives (University College, London).
1971–1974. Study on the mechanism of accumulation of heavy metals (mercury and nickel) in plants (University of Pisa).
1975–1978. Study of specific anosmias (USDA, Berkeley, USA and University of Pisa). 1979–present. Biochemical mechanisms of olfactory transduction in vertebrates and insects. Design and synthesis of sensors for odours, based on conducting polymers.

Scientific achievements
Metals in plants. In mercury–accumulating tobacco leaves he described the first of a new family of cysteine–rich peptides, later rediscovered and now widely know as "phytochelatins". These peptides bind heavy metals in plants, thus neutralising their poisoning effect.
Specific anosmia. Collaborating with John Amoore at the USDA, Berkeley, USA, and then at the University of Pisa, he contributed to the identification of some primary odours.
Biochemistry of olfaction. In 1980–1982 he discovered a new class of soluble proteins, called OBPs (odorant–binding proteins), that are still the only proteins of the olfactory system proved to bind odorant molecules.This result indicated very early that biochemical research could be applied to olfaction and stimulated research, not only in the field of OBPs, but also in other aspects of olfaction biochemistry. At present he has given the major contribution to the description of perireceptor events in olfaction, with the identification, purification and characterisation of several members of the OBP family. Recent results on the diversity of OBPs expressed in the same animal species have suggested a codification role of these proteins in olfaction. Uses of OBPs in the fabrication of biosensors for odours are also being investigated.
Sensors for odours. In 1984 he developed, together with dr. Krishna Persaud, who visited his laboratory for about three years, sensing elements for odorant molecules, based on different types of conducting polymers These sensors have been the basis for the design and construction of an "electronic nose", further developed by dr. Persaud (now at UMIST, Manchester) and commercialised by the company Aromascan (U.K.), now called Osmetech, which is widely used in food aroma analysis and environmental monitoring.
